Women who vote nominated to the Icelandic Design Awards 2021

October 8th, 2021

Women who vote by graphic designers Snæfríð Þorsteins, Hildigunnur Gunnarsdóttir and Agnar Freyr Stefánsson is nominated to the Icelandic Design Awards 2021. This week we will be announcing the nominations for the year 2021 and the award ceremony will take place on October 29th. Stay tuned.

From the jury
Women who vote is an ambitious print object where hundred years of struggle for political involvement for female voters in Iceland are portrayed in-depth by images and text. The design and layout were the work of graphic designers Snæfríð Þorsteins, Hildigunnur Gunnarsdóttir and Agnar Freyr Stefánsson.

The subject is approached with respect and framed in an appropriate and eye-catching manner. The red color sets the scene along with the excellent type font and an apt graphic narration draws out the quintessence of the political struggle for Icelandic women and its important role in history, in this unique and well-crafted yet accessible volume.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Women who vote is a book about Icelandic women voters for a century. The title refers to the right to vote but also to how women created a space to shape their own lives and society. The focus is on one election year every decade, thus taking eleven slices of women's history over the past hundred years.

ABOUT THE DESIGNERS

Snæfríð and Hildigunnur have runned a design studio together since 2002 and worked on various projects related to art, architecture and culture over the years. Snæfríð studied industrial design and graphic design at ESDI (École Supérieure de Design Industriel) in Paris and Hildigunnur is an educated graphic designer from ArtEZ Hogeschool voor de kunsten in the Netherlands. Agnar Freyr Stefánsson is in his final year in the graphic design department at the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague.

The Icelandic Design Award honours the best Icelandic design and architecture annually. The importance of design in our society, culture and business has been growing steadily, and it is therefore vital to increase the understanding of good design and highlight the value of quality.

Celebrating achievement and excellence, the Icelandic Design Award is given to a designer, a team, a studio or an architect in recognition of an outstanding new work, object, project or collection. The award is given to a recent project that demonstrates creative thinking, resourceful solutions, thorough presentation and professional methodology throughout the design process. Best investment in design recognises successful investment in design or architecture in the past year. It is awarded over to a company that has incorporated design in the core of its operations to create value and increase competitiveness.

This week we will be announcing the nominations for the year 2021 and the award ceremony will take place on October 29th. Stay tuned.

The Icelandic Design Award is established by Iceland Design and Architecture in collaboration with the Iceland University of the Arts, the Museum of Design and Applied Art, Promote Iceland, Landsvirkjun and SI - the Federation of Icelandic Industries.
