Designer Ýr Þrastardóttir is upcycling sweatpants into hikingboots

Fashion designer Ýr Þrastardóttir is designing hiking boots from sweatpants for Business Iceland´s new marketing campaign. She will be on duty this summer in the city center of Reykjavík ready to change pants into shoes for tourists.

Gudjon Bjarnason-Art & Architecture Ateliers (GB-AAA) is  invited to participate at the 17th Venice Architecture Biennale Italian Virtual Pavilion Sezione del Padiglione Italia. DesignMarch in May happened in Reykjavík 2021

Iceland's annual design festival, DesignMarch, was held for the 13th time from 19-23 May 2021. The festival was a huge success with over 85 shows throughout Reykjavik and the greater capital area. According to participating designers and thousands of guests who attended the shows, DesignMarch was a much welcomed addition to the current turbulent times and was full of optimism and hope.

DesignMarch in collaboration with the Icelandic Embassies in the Nordic capitals host events in the form of podcasts, taped in the preparation of the festival in Iceland. The aim is to bring together designers from Iceland and the Nordic capitals in an interesting conversation about design and architecture, thereby creating a foreign forum for the festival in collaboration with the embassy and foreign cooperation site.

Participants in Helsinki are Päivi Häikiö is a graphic designer and a visiting teacher at Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture and Kristín Eva Ólafsdóttir who has over 20 years of experience in the field of design as a partner & art director at Gagarín interactive design studio in Iceland. Moderator is Anni Korkman is Programme Director of Helsinki Design Week and Weekly.

Moderator is Ásta Stefánsdóttir has a masters degree in English- and Theater studies from the University of Copenhagen.

Moderator is Gustaf Kjellin who has a masters degree in curatorial studies from Stockholm University.

Participants are Hannah Stoveland Blindheim is a Norwegian architect who graduated from the Oslo school of Architecture January 2019 and has since then worked at KIMA architects in Oslo and Vignir Freyr Helgason is an Icelandic architect with a master’s degree from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture (2010) and an executive master’s degree in Architectural Heritage from The Oslo School of Architecture and Design (2020). Moderator is Pétur Níelsson is a journalist from NLA University College.

Lecture series - Fashion designer Helga Lára Halldórsdóttir

The lecture is called Mapping theory through practice - the logic of success and failure and a part of the Sneiðmynd lecture series at the Iceland University of the Arts. Helga Lára holds a BA degree from the Iceland University of the Arts and an MFA in fashion design from The Swedish School of Textiles. Since graduating in 2018 she has been a part-time lecturer at the Iceland University of the Arts and The Reykjavík School of Visual Arts. The lecture is on Teams, Tuesday April 13th at 12.10.

New MArch programme at the Iceland University of the Arts 

For the first time architecture will be taught on Master‘s level in Iceland, and the first time that local architecture students are given the option of completing their architecture studies in Iceland. The MArch programme is a two-year international programme and will start in the fall 2021. Application deadline for the programme is April 7th.

The Icelandic nominations for the Mies van der Rohe Awards

The European Commission and the Fundació Mies van der Rohe are pleased to announce the first list of the works competing for the 2022 European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award. The Icelandic nominations are Drangar guesthouse by Studio Grandi, Gudlaug natural pool by Basalt Architects and The Visitor Centre in Borgarfjörður Eystri by Andersen & Sigurdsson Architects.
