Dögg & Dýpi – in dialogue with Nature at 3daysofdesign

Dögg Guðmundsdóttir & Dýpi present the exhibition A Space Between States at the Icelandic Embassy for 3daysofdesign. Here, design is not only about function, but about presence. A lamp becomes a source of wellbeing. A table holds generations. A chair carries architecture within its form. Through furniture, objects, and material experimentation, the exhibition explores transformation, time, and the emotional language of design. Time is embedded in the works through reused materials, symbolic numbers, natural cycles, and personal narratives. The objects evolve, adapt, and accompany us through different stages of life — from childhood to adulthood, from beginning to end.
For this exhibition, nature is not merely an inspiration, but an integral part of the essence of the works and the installation itself, which is created using Dýpi’s ocean paint made from calcareous algae harvested in Arnarfjörður, Iceland.

Dögg Guðmundsdóttir is a Copenhagen based Icelandic designer who recently gained widespread attention through her participation in the latest season of Danmarks Næste Klassiker, where she was one of five competing designers. The works on display include pieces originally created for the show, alongside recent works and pieces previously exhibited at Snedkernes Efterårsudstilling — the long-established annual exhibition celebrating collaborations between designers and cabinetmakers, now in its 45th year.

Dýpi began as an entrepreneurial project, developed by Sirrý Ágústsdóttir, an entrepreneur, and Árný Þórarinsdóttir, architect and was nominated for the Icelandic Design Awards 2025 for Product of the Year. The paint is exceptionally breathable, environmentally friendly, plastic-free, and a great example of how natural raw materials, available in large quantities, can be used in an innovative way.
Curating the exhibition is Ólöf Rut Stefánsdóttir a multidisciplinary creative and curator working across design, events, and media. She has collaborated with various designers and artists over the years and since 2020, she has been the director of Ásmundarsalur, a cultural venue in Reykjavík.
This marks the fourth consecutive year that Iceland Design and Architecture producer of DesignMarch, the annual Icelandic design festival in Reykjavík, in collaboration with the Icelandic Embassy in Copenhagen and Business Iceland, participates in 3daysofdesign, showcasing Icelandic design, creativity and innovation.
Icelandic design is characterized by minimalist aesthetics, sustainable practices and a deep connection to nature. As a relatively young design culture, it remains experimental and uninhibited by tradition, often shaped by material exploration, traditional techniques and cultural heritage.
Opening party: Wednesday June 10th: 4.30pm-6.30pm.
